Erdoan responds positively to Assad's call for better relations
ANKARA
President Recep Tayyip Erdoan has said he is open to restoring diplomatic ties with Syria, following his counterpart Bashar al-Assad's call for improved ties between the nations.
There is no reason why diplomatic relations should not be established. We can continue in the same way as we did together in the past, Erdoan told reporters after Friday prayers on June 28.
The president recalled previous discussions with Assad, which even included families, adding: “It's not impossible. It would happen again tomorrow.”
The two countries' foreign ministers met in late 2022 for top-level negotiations between their neighbors, at odds since 2011, when the Arab Spring uprisings reached Syria and plunged the country into war.
The conflict has left hundreds of thousands dead, involved numerous foreign powers and fragmented the country.
Assad has recently shown willingness to repair ties with Turkey as part of broader regional reconciliation efforts.
A message shared on the Syrian presidency's website on June 25 said it “affirms Syria's openness to all initiatives” aimed at improving Ankara-Damascus relations “on the basis of Syria's sovereignty, of territorial integrity in its entirety, of the fight against terrorism and terrorist organizations.”
He conveyed this message to the Russian envoy for Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, during a meeting in Damascus, according to the official Syrian news agency.
Last year, Erdoan did not rule out negotiations with Assad but reiterated his position on Tehran's military operations in northern Syria.
“We do not aim to interfere in the internal affairs of Syria. The Syrian people are a fraternal community,” he said on June 28.
Direct Russian-mediated talks between Turkish and Syrian officials that began in 2022 ended in failure, with Damascus insisting on the withdrawal of Turkish forces from Syrian territory.
Trkiye controls a large territory in northern Syria following operations between 2016 and 2020.
