'It seemed to me…': Rahul Gandhi hits out at PM Modi in video message over Opposition's demand for NEET debate in Lok Sabha | India News

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi On Friday, a debate over alleged irregularities in the conduct of the medical entrance exam was alleged NEET was not allowed in Parliament on the instructions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“It is unfortunate that the government did not want a debate. It seemed to me that the order came directly from the Prime Minister. It is sad that the Prime Minister of India, who should actually be leading the debate and telling us his opinion and should be telling us what he is going to do, he just does not want a debate,” Rahul Gandhi said in a video message.
“This is a problem that has affected 2 million students. 70 times in 7 years, documents have been leaked. It is clear that there is a systemic problem, it is clear that there is enormous corruption and we simply cannot continue like this,” said the opposition leader.
Rahul said opposition parties were unanimous on the need for a one-day meeting. discussion on NEET and were determined to hold a debate in a peaceful and accommodative manner. “The idea behind this discussion was that we get a resolution to this problem because millions and millions of people, their family members are suffering, they don't know what's going to happen in the future and it's important that we give them clarity,” the opposition leader said.
Earlier in the day, as the House met in the morning, the opposition moved an adjournment motion demanding that all matters be suspended and NEET-related matters be discussed first. However, President Om Birla and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju insisted that opposition members be allowed to discuss the NEET issue during the motion of thanks on the President's speech.
The Speaker said that certain norms of Parliament should be followed and committees should be formed. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said that the students were not aware of this. They are only demanding justice.
As members of the Congress, TMC and DMK stormed the well, Rijiju said it was the first time that the opposition was seen demanding a discussion on an issue before the House considers the motion of thanks on the President's speech.
“I assure the opposition that we will answer any question you raise during the discussion on the motion of thanks,” Rijiju said.
As members continued to chant slogans, Birla said, “There is a difference between a protest on the road and a protest inside the House… You (Opposition) don't want the House to meet? You don't want to discuss NEET during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks?”
Without end of impasse, Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day.
Amid the storm over the issue, Lok Sabha witnessed unusual scenes when Rahul Gandhi claimed that his microphone was switched off and asked the Speaker to switch it on, to which the latter promptly responded.
Responding to Rahul's accusation, Om Birla said, “I don't have a button to turn off the microphone. There was a similar setup before. There is no mechanism to gag the microphone. »
A video released by the Congress on X shows Rahul asking the Lok Speaker to switch on his microphone. Sharing the video, the Congress alleged that a conspiracy was being hatched to silence the voice of the opposition and students despite thousands of students staring at a bleak future.
The viral video, showing the Congress leader and the President exchanging barbs, was shared by Congress on his X handle.
