Illegal marriage case: Pakistani court rejects Imran Khan and wife's petition

An Islamabad court has rejected appeals by Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to suspend their sentence in an illegal marriage case.

The ruling by Additional District and Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka upholds their convictions based on a complaint from Bushra Bibi's ex-husband Khawar Fareed Maneka.

Maneka claimed that Khan and Bushra Bibi got married during her Iddat period, a mandatory waiting period in Islamic law before a woman can remarry after a divorce or the death of her husband.

The court's 10-page order found that there was no reason to suspend the sentence under Section 426 Cr.PC, rejecting their pleas.

Khan, 71, has been detained at Adiala prison since August last year, initially convicted in the Toshakhana corruption case, which was later suspended.

This latest decision means Khan remains incarcerated solely in connection with the Iddat case.

The verdict sparked protests outside the court by supporters of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, who also blocked a nearby road.

PTI leaders have vowed to challenge the decision in the Islamabad High Court, condemning what they describe as an unfair decision.

The wedding of Khan and Bushra Bibi in 2018, during Khan's tenure as prime minister, attracted particular attention.

Bushra, Khan's third wife, was initially known as his spiritual guide before their relationship evolved.

Her divorce after 28 years of marriage preceded their union, which has remained a central point of Pakistani political discourse.
