Jakarta election: Kaesang denies PKS allegations that Widodo interfered
Jakarta (ANTARA) –
Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) leader Kaesang Pangarep has denied a claim by the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) secretary general that his father, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), had asked the party to support him as a candidate for Jakarta governor.
“Don’t drag Mr. President (in the regional elections) because I am the leader of the party,” he said in a press release received by BETWEEN in Jakarta on Friday.
Kaesang said that as party leader, he had the right to decide who would participate in the upcoming regional elections in Jakarta, as many parties have sought PSI support for their candidates.
The PSI has eight seats in the metropolitan city's legislature for the period 2024-2029, he added.
PKS Secretary General Habib Aboe Bakar Al-Habsyi earlier claimed that President Widodo had given Kaesang's name to several political parties as gubernatorial candidates.
Kaesang denied Al-Habsyi's claims, saying they were aimed at preventing the PKS from merging with the PSI in the regional elections.
PKS recently nominated former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan as its candidate for Jakarta governor.
Anies lost the recent presidential election but is seeking re-election in Jakarta.
Local media reported that Ridwan Kamil, former governor of West Java, could potentially be Anies' toughest rival for the Jakarta governorship seat.
The General Election Commission (KPU) announced that regional elections will be held simultaneously across the country on November 27, 2024.
