Turkish President Expresses Willingness to Reestablish Diplomatic Relations with Syria
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday there are no obstacles preventing Turkey and Syria from Restoration of diplomatic relations which were cut off at the start of the Syrian civil war more than a decade ago.
His comments come just days after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad made similar remarks, indicating a willingness by the two neighbors to end tensions and normalize relations.
There is no reason why (diplomatic ties) should not be established, Erdogan told reporters.
“In the same way that we maintained our relations with Syria in the past, we had these meetings with Mr. Assad, including family meetings, but we cannot say that this will not happen again,” Erdogan said. He was referring to a vacation the Erdogan and Assad families spent in southern Turkey in 2008, before their relations deteriorated.
During the Syrian conflict, Turkey supported armed opposition groups in the northwest of the country who sought to oust Assad from power. The Syrian government has repeatedly condemned Ankara's control over territory it seized through several military incursions since 2016 targeting Kurdish forces supported by the United States and which Turkey considers terrorists.
On Wednesday, Syrian state media reported that during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy for Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, Assad affirmed Syria's openness to all initiatives related to Syria-Turkey relations, based on the sovereignty of the Syrian state over all its territories on the one hand, and combating all forms of terrorism and its organizations on the other.
The Russian envoy, in turn, declared that the current circumstances seem more than ever conducive to the success of mediations, that Russia is ready to work to advance the negotiations and that the objective is to succeed in restoring relations between Syria and Turkey. , reported the official Syrian news agency SANA.
Erdogan told reporters that Turkey respected Syria's sovereignty.
“There is no question of our aim being to interfere in Syria's internal affairs,” Erdogan said. “The Syrian people are our brothers.”

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the opposition-controlled Syrian city of Idlib and surrounding areas on Friday to protest reports that a key crossing between government-controlled territory and areas controlled by Turkey-backed opposition groups in Aleppo province will soon be reopened to commercial traffic, for the first time since the start of the country's civil war.
The protesters carried banners reading: “Opening the crossings with the regime is a crime and a betrayal of the blood of the martyrs,” and calling for opening battles, not crossings.
