Pakistani Parliament denounces US Congress resolution calling for investigation into recent elections

ISLAMABAD Pakistan's lower house of parliament on Friday denounced a US congressional resolution calling this week for an independent investigation into allegations that Pakistan's parliamentary elections earlier this year were massively rigged.

The Pakistani resolution, introduced by ruling party MP Shaista Malik, was passed by the National Assembly despite the objections of lawmakers from the party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who say the February 8 vote was faked.

In a televised speech, Malik said the US resolution adopted on Wednesday was completely contrary to reality. She added that Pakistan would not tolerate any such interference in its internal affairs.

The latest development came a day after Pakistan's foreign ministry rejected the US congressional resolution, stunning Pakistani officials.

On Friday, Islamabad announced that it had decided to appoint a new ambassador to the United States to replace Masood Khan.

Addressing a press conference, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baluch said Khan would be replaced by diplomat Rizwan Saeed Sheikh. However, she said the new appointment was already under consideration.

Baluch said Pakistan regretted the resolution passed by the US House of Representatives.

The resolution clearly stems from an insufficient and flawed understanding of Pakistan's political and electoral processes. It is also an unsolicited interference in the internal affairs of Pakistan, she said.

The latest development came a day after a Pakistan appeals court upheld the conviction and seven-year prison sentence handed down to Khan and his wife over their 2018 marriage, which was found to be illegal. The couple denied violating a mandatory three-month waiting period, a requirement of Islamic law enforced by Pakistani law.

Although Pakistan's top leaders expressed anger at the US resolution, Khan's party welcomed it, saying its election victory had turned into a defeat by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Khan's party won the most seats, but fell short of a simple majority to form a government. This paved the way for Khan's political rivals to form a coalition government.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who replaced Khan after his ouster from power in 2022 in a vote of no confidence in Parliament, has repeatedly proposed dialogue with Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, which has a strong presence in the Parliament.

However, Khan's party rejected the offer, saying Sharif came to power through a fraudulent vote.
