Adiala jail run by ISI officials, Imran Khan says in court petition

Islamabad, June 28: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking judicial intervention in the affairs of Rawalpindi Central Jail, or Adiala Jail, where he is lodged, claiming that the jail is being run by an ISI colonel and major who are interfering in its functioning.

In the petition filed through his lawyer Shoaib Shaheen, Khan said that two intelligence officers are virtually in control of the prison, Dawn reported.

The petition stated that despite clear orders from the IHC, the Adiala Jail superintendent did not allow him to consult PTI leaders and lawyers.

He cited the case recently decided by the IHC in which the High Court, while referring to Rule 265 of the Prisons Manual, observed that the inmate has the right to write letters and be interviewed two times per week.

The petition states: It is stated that this order is adopted to recall, reiterate and preserve the values ​​and traditions of our legal system and has little to do with the identity of the petitioner. These values ​​and traditions must apply to all, regardless of the petitioner, but, needless to say, they acquire added importance when the prisoner in question happens to be not only a political leader with a significant following, but also the former holder of the highest executive office in the nation.

According to the petition, the IHC has repeatedly requested the Adiala Jail superintendent to review the standard operating procedure that two days a week is not sufficient to hold a meeting.

The petitioner said that the Supreme Court of Pakistan, while hearing an appeal regarding the amendments to the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) laws, admitted that the PTI and the petitioner enjoy more great support among the masses and that the Supreme Court has suggested political dialogues to enable the party play its important role in reducing the miseries of the masses at large.

However, the petition states that this entire process has been managed by the Colonel and Major of ISI who are creating interference and leniency in the civil administration due to their mala fide intentions against the petitioner and due to their interference, the petitioner is unable to consult with the party leadership and his fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution are not protected.

The petition states that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was allowed to consult more than 15 people a day without interruption, while Imran Khan was denied his meetings with the party leadership and lawyers.
