Turkey's Erdogan and Syria's Assad signal desire to restore ties
(Bloomberg) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan echoed his Syrian counterpart Bashar Al-Assad in expressing his desire to restore diplomatic ties, a Russia-backed policy shift that could help end the long-running war. date in Syria.

Erdogan said Friday that restoring friendly ties with Assad was not impossible. The two leaders, who once had close relations, fell out at the start of the Syrian civil war starting in 2011 over Turkey's support for the rebel group seeking to topple Assad.

Erdogan perceives them as a threat because of their ties to the Turkish PKK, which has demanded autonomy within Turkey for decades and is classified as a terrorist group by the European Union and the United States.
Erdogan has long said that the 1998 security agreement with Damascus gives Turkey the right to attack Kurdish forces in Syria if they pose a threat. Russian and Iranian officials have suggested that reviving the Adana deal could pave the way for renewed cooperation between Erdogan and Damascus.
