Pakistani court rejects Imran Khan's wife's appeal in illegal marriage case

An Islamabad court has dismissed appeals filed by former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi against their conviction for illegal marriage. The decision, passed by Additional District and Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka, upholds their sentences based on a complaint filed by Bushra Bibi's ex-husband Khawar Fareed Maneka.

Maneka alleged that Khan and Bushra Bibi married during her period of Iddat, a mandatory waiting period in Islamic law after a divorce or death of a husband. The court's 10-page order concluded that there was no basis to suspend the sentence under Section 426 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, thereby rejecting their motions.

Khan, 71, has been incarcerated at Adiala prison since August last year, after being initially convicted in the Toshakhana corruption case, which was later suspended. The move now means Khan remains incarcerated solely because of the Iddat case.

The verdict sparked protests outside the court by supporters of the Khans Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, who also blocked a nearby road. PTI leaders have vowed to appeal the decision in the Islamabad High Court, condemning what they consider an unfair decision.
