Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge blames PM Modi for Delhi airport roof collapse amid heavy rains | Delhi News
Kharge cited this incident and several other infrastructural failures to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi's claims of developing “world-class infrastructure”. He also noted that the collapsed portion was inaugurated by the prime minister on March 10.
Hours after the incident, Kharge reached out to X to express his concerns. “Corruption and criminal negligence are responsible for the collapse of shoddy infrastructure falling like a pack of cards in the last 10 years of the Modi government,” he wrote. He listed several other incidents, including the Roof collapse at Jabalpur airportthe poor state of Ayodhyanew roads, leak at Ram Mandir, cracks in Mumbai Trans Harbor Link road and 13 new bridges collapsing in Bihar in 2023 and 2024, among others.
He also spoke about the submergence of the Pragati Maidan tunnel and the tragedy of the collapse of the Morbi bridge in Gujarat.
“Our heartfelt condolences to the victims of the Delhi airport tragedy. They have borne the brunt of a corrupt, incompetent and selfish government,” Kharge added.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi echoed Kharge's sentiments, highlighting the recent inauguration by the Prime Minister and criticising the poor quality of work. She said, “The roof of Delhi Airport Terminal 1, inaugurated by the Prime Minister in March, collapsed today, leading to the tragic death of a taxi driver. The roof of Jabalpur Airport, inaugurated by the Prime Minister three months ago, has also collapsed. The entire country is saddened by the poor state of construction work in Ayodhya.”
Questioning whether the Prime Minister would take responsibility for these issues, Priyanka added, “This is the corrupt model of the BJP of 'accepting donations and giving business' that has now been exposed. The question is whether the Prime Minister will take responsibility for these wrong constructions. How is this corrupt model working?”
Responding to the allegations, BJP leader Amit Malviya clarified that the portion of T1 that collapsed was inaugurated in 2009, during the Congress-led UPA era. “The portion of T1 that collapsed was reopened in 2009, when the Congress-led UPA was in power,” he said. “At that time, there was no concept of quality control and contracts were awarded to whoever sent the biggest bribe to the ruling Congress. Sonia Gandhi, who was the super prime minister then, must answer.”
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu also spoke, saying the collapsed canopy was part of an older structure built in 2009. “We are taking this incident seriously, I would like to clarify that the building inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on the other side and the building that collapsed here is an old building and was opened in 2009.”
The incident took place amid heavy rains that lashed Delhi-NCR on Friday.
