The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the international body responsible for coordinating and evaluating policies to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, announced on June 28 that it had removed Turkey from its “list gray” of jurisdictions subject to special supervision.
Turkey has made significant progress in improving its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing regime, the Paris-based body said in a statement.
The ATF's decision marks a significant victory for Turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Imek, who has spearheaded a major economic overhaul since his appointment following President Recep Tayyip Erdoan's re-election last year.
Imek has focused on attracting international investors back to the Turkish market, which has seen a mass exodus in recent years. He achieved this by strengthening financial regulation and dismantling unorthodox policies that fueled a prolonged economic crisis.
