The government tried. In fact, those who run the current government tried even when they were not in power. But Imran Khan and his PTI are simply not interested in engaging with other politicians. Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Omar Ayub rejected PM's offer and said PTI would talk with government once PTI founder and other incarcerated workers and leaders are released from prison. Earlier this month, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar had said that Imran Khan had given the go-ahead for talks with the government.

It seems that at the end of the day, the PTI is simply not interested in talking to the civilian government and would rather talk to the real ones. Time and again, PTI leaders have made it clear that they believe this government is not powerful and cannot solve any problem, and therefore the party prefers to just talk to those it considers the real stakeholders. Critics say that when the PTI conditions negotiations on the release of Imran Khan, the party is in effect signaling that it does not want to move forward. PTI supporters offer another view: perhaps the government itself is not interested in a dialogue with the PTI but continues to make this offer because it knows that the establishment is not willing to talk to the opposition party and that the PTI will continue to reject the government's offer for talks.

There is another view that sees the internal confusions within the PTI and questions how a party that seems disoriented without its leader and has internal fissures can begin a meaningful dialogue with the government when it must first solve your own problems. This view is due to statements by former PTI leaders and some commentators who have claimed that the current PTI leadership is not interested in releasing Imran Khan from prison as they are enjoying the fame and popularity in his absence. There were also reports of fissures emerging within the party, as 21 of its lawmakers, now part of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), reportedly hinted that they would form an advanced bloc in the face of the incapacity of senior leaders of the party to secure the release of Imran from prison. Whatever the internal problems of the PTI, the party must show seriousness when it comes to politics and democracy. Sitting down with the government and resolving the issues should be the first step in the right direction. If he continues to reject these offers, one day the government may no longer be willing to sit with them when the party is ready. Such a stalemate could only lead to greater political instability.
