AK Trkiyes Party to dissect municipal services during three-day camp
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in Trkiyes will camp for three days in the capital, Ankara, to analyze municipal services and exchange experiences.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoan will gather 541 mayors from provinces and districts across the country this Sunday, where eight Cabinet ministers will make presentations.
The mayors are expected to personally tell Erdoan about the difficulties they face on the ground, as well as other problems such as lack of budget, staff salaries and bureaucratic obstacles.
Erdoan will address the assembly on the second day, while party spokesperson Mer Elik will oversee a general evaluation panel on the third day.
The ruling party presented a roadmap for the upcoming 2028 general elections during another three-day camp earlier this month, which includes the launch of Trkiye meetings which will begin this month and last until ordinary party congress, scheduled for October 2025, which is said to be different from usual assemblies.
The AKP wants to establish a broad consultation network to discuss new policies and analyze its performance over the past 20 years. The party will send its deputies into the field to meet citizens and personally answer questions from the public.
In addition to the field work, an online organizational model is also being developed.
The AKP plans to increase its membership, currently over 11 million nationwide, by targeting voters who opted for other parties or abstained in the May 2023 general election and March 31 local elections.
Turnout was particularly low in local elections, down by almost 5 million people to 78.1%, compared to 84.7% in 2019 and 86.9% in the 2023 elections, meaning that 22 voters out of 100 did not go to the polls.
For the first time in years, the AKP lagged behind the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP). The CHP won 14 metropolitan municipalities, including Istanbul and the capital, Ankara, although the AKP has been trying to retake them after losing them to the CHP in the 2019 elections.
With Erdoan promising to make the necessary changes within the party, new presidents were appointed last week in seven provincial sections.
