MK Stalin writes to PM Modi, seeks exemption for Tamil Nadu from NEET
After the Tamil Nadu assembly on Friday passed a resolution opposing the NEET exam, Chief Minister M K Stalin wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking exemption for Tamil Nadu from the exam and also the abolition of the system at the national level.
“I am writing this letter to once again reiterate our constant demand to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET for medical college admissions and also to abolish this system at the national level. We have thought long and hard about whether the selection process for professional courses should be done solely through Grade 12 grades rather than through a separate entrance exam, which poses an unwanted additional stress for students,” Stalin wrote in his letter.
“In this regard, we have unanimously passed a bill in our Legislative Assembly to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET and to provide medical admissions based on Class 12 marks. This bill has been sent to the Government of India for Presidential approval, but the approval is still pending,” Stalin added, raising a concern.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief further said that the irregularities that occurred in the recent NEET exam validated the Tamil Nadu government's opposition to the exam. He added that many other states have also started expressing their views on the need to do away with the existing selection process.
Stalin added that considering these aspects, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a unanimous resolution on Friday, June 28, 2024.
“We urge the Union government to give its assent to the bill seeking to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET and also amend the National Medical Commission Act to do away with this selection process at the national level. I am enclosing a copy of the resolution of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and look forward to your early intervention in this regard,” Stalin concluded.
According to the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly, NEET has damaged the opportunities of rural students to pursue medical studies and rendered school education useless, and deprived students of the right to get seats in medical colleges.
“NEET should be scrapped. Tamil Nadu should be given an exemption. The central government should approve the bill passed by the Assembly allowing Class 12 marks as a necessary qualification for pursuing medical studies,” Stalin said after adopting the resolution.
Further, MK Stalin also wrote to the chief ministers of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Telangana and West Bengal, requesting them to consider passing a resolution in their respective state assemblies urging the Union government to abolish NEET.
