Jokowi and MPR discuss amendments to the 1945 Constitution, here are the results!
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – MPR leaders discussed the speech on amending the 1945 Constitution during their meeting with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the State Palace in Jakarta, Friday (28/6/2024). It was emphasized that the MPR would not bring this amendment.
It can be seen that the meeting was attended by the Chairman and eight Vice Chairman of the MPR, namely Chairman of the MPR RI Bambang Soesatyo, as well as 8 Vice Chairman of the MPR RI, namely Ahmad Basarah, Ahmad Muzani, Jazilul Fawaid, Sjarifuddin Hasan, Muhammad Hidayat Nur Wahid, Yandri Susanto, Muhammad Amir Uskara and Fadel Muhammad, as well as Secretary General of the MPR RI Siti Fauziah.
After the meeting, Ahmad Basarah said that Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto, Cabinet Secretary Minister Pratikno and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung were also present at the meeting.
He further explained that the meeting also discussed the amendment speech. He emphasized that under the current leadership of the MPR, it would not implement the amendments to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia.
“It is emphasized that the MPR under our leadership is no longer able to implement the amendments to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, because we only have 3 months left in power,” Basarah said during of a press release.
According to him, according to the statutes and regulations, the MPR can only amend the Constitution if its mandate is longer than 6 months. Therefore, according to him, this amendment speech will be submitted to the MPR for the next period.
However, according to Basarah, the current leadership of the MPR only provides recommendations, as to whether the decision will be implemented or not, it depends on the next authority.
“There is no carryover system, we only give recommendations to the next MPR, so the next MPR has full authority to make amendments or not,” he said.
On another occasion, MPR Vice President Yandri Susanto stressed that amendments to the Constitution would not be possible during this period. “It’s definitely not possible in this time period, that’s for sure,” he said.
