Erdogan ready to restore relations with Syria
“There is no reason why this should not happen,” Erdogan said, stressing that Ankara had no intention of interfering in Syria's internal affairs.
“Just as we have maintained our very strong ties in the past – we have even had family-to-family talks with Mr Assad – it is certainly not possible (to say) that this will not happen again in the future, it can happen,” he said after Friday prayers.
On Wednesday, Assad said his government was open to “all initiatives related to relations between Syria and Turkey, based on the sovereignty of the Syrian state over its entire territory on the one hand, and the fight against all forms of terrorism and its organizations on the other.”
Turkey severed ties with Syria in March 2012, a year after the Arab country was gripped by deadly violence by foreign-backed militants.
Meanwhile, Turkey deployed forces to Syria in October 2019, violating the Arab country's territorial integrity.
Ankara-backed militants have been deployed to northeastern Syria after Turkish military forces launched a long-threatened cross-border invasion in a stated attempt to push Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militants away from border areas.
Ankara considers the US-backed YPG a terrorist organisation linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been demanding an autonomous Kurdish region within Turkey since 1984.
According to the Kurdish government in northeast Syria, the Turkish offensive has killed hundreds of civilians, including dozens of children, since it began. Turkey has also played a major role in supporting terrorists in Syria since a foreign-backed insurgency took control of the country more than a decade ago.
Today, after more than a decade, the two neighboring countries are taking steps toward reconciliation.
In April 2023, defense ministers and intelligence chiefs from Iran, Russia, Syria and Turkey held talks as part of efforts to normalize relations between Ankara and Damascus.
Last August, the Syrian leader stressed that Ankara must propose a timetable for the withdrawal of Turkish troops from his country with a view to normalizing relations.
The Turkish-Syrian rapprochement comes as several Arab countries in the Persian Gulf have reestablished ties with Damascus after Syrian government forces, with the help of Iran and Russia, managed to regain control of almost all regions to terrorist groups./Press tv
