Whitmer has issued one of the strictest stay-at-home orders in the country during the coronavirus pandemic, making her deeply unpopular with conservatives, who have petitioned for her impeachment. Trump has called on his supporters to free Michigan from Gretchen Half-Whitmer.

On April 30, 2020, armed protesters marched to the Michigan Capitol to protest Whitmer's stay-at-home order and demanded that police officers guarding the building let them in.

A few months later, a series of men were arrested for conspiring to kidnap Ms. Whitmer. Nine were later convicted or pleaded guilty to crimes related to the conspiracy, which involved weapons training and surveillance of her vacation home.
