T20 World Cup: PM Modi calls Indian team, congratulates them on victory over South Africa
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke to members of the Indian cricket team over the phone and congratulated them on their seven-run win over South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup final.
In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi congratulated the players for displaying their excellent skill and spirit throughout the tournament and said their commitment was very motivating.
“I spoke to the Indian team and congratulated them on their exemplary success in the T20 World Cup. They have shown excellent skills and spirit throughout the tournament. The commitment of each and every player is very motivating,” he tweeted.
During the conversation, the Prime Minister congratulated Rohit Sharma for his splendid captaincy and appreciated his T20I career.
Prime Minister Modi paid special mention to Virat Kohli, who scored a valuable 76, and his immense contribution to Indian cricket. He also thanked Rahul Dravid, who resigned as head coach after India's win, for his contribution to Indian cricket.
The Prime Minister thanked Hardik Pandya for his heroics in the last over and Suryakumar Yadav for his game-changing catch to dismiss South African batter David Miller.
He also praised Jasprit Bumrah's contributions to the T20 World Cup and Indian cricket.
Prime Minister Modi on Saturday released a video message and congratulated the 'Men in Blue' on their victory over South Africa in the see-saw final of the T20 World Cup at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.
“CHAMPIONS! Our team is bringing the T20 World Cup home in STYLE! We are proud of the Indian cricket team. This match was HISTORIC,” he tweeted, along with a congratulatory video message for the team.
This was India's second T20 World Cup win in 17 years after winning the inaugural edition in 2007. It was also after 11 years that the Indian team won a major ICC title, the last being the Champions Trophy in 2013.
