'Our fight is for survival': Turkey's Pride Week is more about 'resistance than celebration'
During his re-election campaign last year, the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and its allies have targeted the LGBTQ community, calling it “evil” and a threat to traditional family values. Activists claim that this rhetoric has led to an increase in hostility towards the community.
Mozalar stressed: “We are waging a struggle against the police, against the state security apparatus,” adding: “That's why I can never consider (the pride march) a celebration, because frankly, we don't have much to celebrate.”
Mozalar grew up in Mersin and faced bullying from peers and teachers who sensed her difference. It wasn't until she was 17 that she truly understood her identity. “I'll never forget the moment I stood naked in front of the mirror and thought, 'Yes, I'm a woman,'” Mozalar told AFP news agency.
In Turkey, transition is an extremely difficult process, which involves numerous consultations with psychiatrists, endocrinologists and examinations by various medical experts. Only a court can approve gender reassignment surgery, and the cost has become prohibitive for most transgender people.
Despite the surgery, Mozalar still struggles with certain aspects of his body but has learned to appreciate his own beauty. However, Turkish society remains largely hostile towards the LGBTQ community. Mozalar rarely feels safe on the streets and often avoids going out due to the constant harassment she faces.
As a DJ, Mozalar finds solace in performing at LGBTQ and women-friendly venues. Despite the challenges, she has no plans to leave Turkey, saying, “I was born and raised in Turkey and I believe I have a job to do here.” She hopes for a day when pride in Turkey is no longer a rebellion but a celebration.
