Paris Olympics: PM Modi highlights first athletes during Mann Ki Baat | News from India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the Paris Olympic athletes had prepared “life and soul” for the upcoming Games by collectively participating in nearly 900 international competitions, as he launched a campaign to generate online support for the travelling contingent.
Three years ago, India won its best haul of seven medals at the Tokyo Olympics, with javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra becoming the first athlete from the country to win a gold medal in athletics.
The Prime Minister made the statements during his 'Mann Ki Baat' radio address, the first after the general elections. Radio broadcasting was interrupted in February before the general elections.
“The performance of our athletes in Tokyo has won the hearts of every Indian. Since the Tokyo Olympics, our athletes have been preparing with their whole life and soul. Together, they have participated in around 900 international competitions,” Modi said.
After failing to make it to Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, all eyes will be on the shooters, with a record 21-member team heading to Paris this time. Maheshwari Chauhan has secured India's 21st shooting quota and will be seen in the women's skeet event at the Olympic shotgun competitions.
Modi also highlighted that the Paris Olympics will feature several firsts for Indian sports, including equestrian dressage and women's 76kg wrestling.
Anush Agarwalla will be India's first ever appearance in the dressage event at the Olympics, while Reetika Hooda became the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics in the women's heavyweight section.
“Both men’s and women’s table tennis teams have qualified. Our women shooters are also part of the Indian shotgun team,” he said, while urging people to use the hashtag ‘cheer4Bharat’ to motivate them.
“This time our athletes will compete in categories of wrestling and horse riding events which they have never participated in before,” Modi added.
The Paris Olympics will be held from July 26 to August 11 and over 100 Indian athletes have so far qualified for the quadrennial competition.
