At least 15 arrested in Türkiye during LGBTQ protest
Turkish police arrested at least 15 protesters in Istanbul on Sunday for taking part in a banned LGBT pride rally, after searching the streets after arriving at the scene after participants had dispersed, a Reuters witness said.
Police declined to comment.
The Istanbul governor's office had announced on Sunday that the pride march would not be allowed. Turkish police blocked off central Istanbul to prevent the march, closing metro stations and blocking traffic on main streets.
President Tayyip Erdogan's Islamic-rooted AK Party has toughened its rhetoric against the LGBT community over the past decade and has banned pride marches since 2015, citing “security reasons.”

The Istanbul governor's office has called organizations calling for pride marches illegal.
Following the ban, LGBT groups rallied in another part of Istanbul, on the Asian side, with one representative reading a statement that said: “We never tire of deceiving the police and forcing them to take care of us.”
