Imran Khan Proved N Leaders Wrong: MQM Chief Altaf Hussain

Speaking at a rally organized in London on Saturday to celebrate the 46th founding day of the All Pakistan Muttahida Students Organization, Mr. Hussain said former interior minister Rana Sanaullah and PML leader N Khawja Asif reportedly ridiculed Imran by saying that Khan would not be able to bear the hardships of the prison. Imran has already spent more than a year in prison and he is still determined. This proved everyone wrong, including Khawja Asif and Rana Sana.

The MQM chief observed that Khan is a courageous leader, adding that unfortunately, he has not found good leaders for his party.

Mr Hussain revealed that he had exchanged greetings with Imran Khan years ago at a conference on leadership in India organised by the Times of India. We were staying in the same hotel but Imran had to leave India early and we could not meet or have a detailed discussion.

Hussain said he had opposed the role of intelligence agencies in politics. I was branded a traitor and malicious propaganda was unleashed against me and my party. But today, Imran Khan and the whole of Pakistan are saying what I said in 1978. Even the people of Punjab now admit that I was right in criticising the establishment's interference in politics.

The MQM leader lashed out at former Prime Minister and Chairman LN Nawaz Sharif, saying the country's three-time chief executive had always abandoned the MQM. Nawaz Sharif stabbed me in the back. It was he who launched a military crackdown against the army in 1992 and the current operation against my party was also launched by him.

Mr Hussain said there could be no real democracy in Pakistan unless all institutions were confined to their constitutional domain. I am not against the army because no modern country can exist with an army, but I have opposed its political role in the past and I will continue to oppose this role in the future.

He dispelled the impression that his party was created by the establishment. I was imprisoned thrice during the dictatorial regime of General Zia and was asked to give up my struggle but I refused and was sent to jail. It was the establishment that hatched conspiracies to pit one ethnic community against another. We are not against any nation, including Punjabis.

On the occasion, workers of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf UK also met Mr Hussain and thanked him for raising his voice against the state repression which they said was aimed at dismantling the party.

MQM leaders Mustafa Azizabadi, Qasim Ali Raza, Suhail Khanzada and others were also present on the occasion.
