One of the problems with presidential debates is that they never really address the complexity of the decisions that presidents actually have to make in the course of their duties.
But Joe Biden's performance in the first debate now leaves him with a presidential choice: stay in the race or drop out. As with all presidential decisions, there is no clear path, and the decision must be made by one person.
As with many presidential choices, the wisest course might be to ignore the pundits and editorial boards and focus on the long term. Voters don’t care about performance ratings; they care about positions, on issues like abortion and protecting democracy. Moreover, Trump’s legal troubles will continue to play out, putting him back in focus in the race.
But like all presidential decisions, ego can get in the way of the common good. Polls show that Donald Trump's record – presidential and criminal – was not enough to encourage voters to reject him. On the other hand, voters are telling pollsters that Biden's age concerns them. The debate, during which the president wandered and wandered, did not dispel this question. Leaving the race would draw more attention to the existential danger that Biden, Trump says, poses.
Trump's responses to the debate are proof that Biden is right, lying without restraint on subjects as diverse as they are varied. But what is more dangerous is the former president's habit of believing entire fantasies surrounding the fictional stolen 2020 election and the events of January 6. Not only do these illusions undermine democracy, they suggest a mind that prefers fiction to inconvenient facts – a disastrous mental reaction for a work that presents you with one inconvenient fact after another.
When voters asked President Biden if he was concerned about his age, he replied, “Look at me.” They did. Now he must look in the mirror and make a presidential decision: Will he be the agent, or the obstacle, of what he believes drove him to run for president: to keep Donald Trump from power?
