Images of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan's sons 'on Hajj pilgrimage' are faked

The edited images have circulated elsewhere on X as well as on Facebook here, here and here.

While comments suggested that some social media users acknowledged that the images had been altered, others appeared to believe they were authentic.

“Congratulations @Jemima_Khan on your children’s Hajj,” read one comment.

“May Allah accept their Hajj,” said another.

Pakistani media organization Soch Fact Check previously debunked the images (archived link).

A reverse image search on Google revealed that the image of the couple on a plane was taken from a photo posted on Instagram by Asim Riaz, who appeared on the popular Indian reality TV show Bigg Boss (links archived here and here).

Riaz, who posted the photo on March 24, 2023, is seen sitting next to Aly Goni, who starred in another season of the same reality show (archived link).

The post's caption included a hashtag stating that both were traveling to Mecca for a pilgrimage performed at any time of the year and that, unlike the hajj, it is not obligatory for Muslims.

Riaz posted various pictures from his Umrah pilgrimage on Instagram.

Indian media outlets Hindustan Times and ANI have reported on Riaz and Goni Umrah pilgrimage in 2023 (archived links here and here).

Meanwhile, the other edited photo shared on social media appearing to show the brothers standing in front of the Kaaba also originally showed reality TV star Riaz.

He posted the photo on Instagram on April 9, 2023 with the caption: “Alhamdulihah (praise be to God) umrah with my brother” (archived link).

The image of the Kaaba has been digitally added to this image.

Imran Khan – who was convicted of corruption over gifts he received while prime minister – remains widely popular in Pakistan, although he is not on the ballot for the April 2024 elections.

Although his 14-year sentence was suspended, the conviction still stands.

In June, a Pakistani high court overturned his treason conviction, but he remains imprisoned for breaking Islamic law by marrying his wife Bushra Bibi too soon after their divorce.

He claims that these affairs were orchestrated to prevent his return to power.
