BJP vs Congress after PM Modi mentions Araku Coffee in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ speech
A political tussle seems to have started between the BJP and the Congress after Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned Araku coffee in the 111th episode of 'Mann ki Baat' on Sunday morning.
While the Congress attacked Prime Minister Modi for taking credit for the coffee brand, the BJP was quick to hit back saying the party was “badly hit” by the defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.
Prime Minister Modi on Sunday praised the “flavor and importance” of Andhra Pradesh's Araku coffee as he recalled sharing a moment over coffee with the state's chief minister, N Chandrababu Naidu.
He also highlighted the popularity of Araku coffee, highlighting its presence at the G20 summit hosted by India in September 2023.
While talking about several Indian products that enjoy high global demand, Prime Minister Modi said, “One such product is Araku coffee, known for its rich flavor and aroma, widely grown in the district of 'Alluri Sita Ram Raju from Andhra Pradesh. Around 1.5 lakh tribal families are engaged in Araku coffee cultivation, and the Girijan cooperative plays a crucial role in its success. By uniting local farmers and encouraging them to grow Araku coffee, the cooperative has significantly increased their income.
However, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised Prime Minister Modi for “exaggerating” the facts.
On X, the Congress leader said the Prime Minister was giving the impression that he had invented the Araku coffee brand.
“It was the Naandi Foundation that pioneered the coffee cultivation initiative by the tribal communities of the beautiful Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh with the help of the state and central governments. As the Minister of State for Commerce, I had the privilege of launching the brand in the Araku Valley on December 21, 2007. I returned five years later as the Union Minister for Rural Development.”
These comments quickly aroused the anger of the BJP.
Calling Jairam Ramesh a 'troll master', Union Minister Piyush Goyal wrote on X: “It is impressive how he constantly questions the definition of intelligence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji spoke about Araku Coffee and Girijan Cooperative Corporation, which was certainly not started by this troll master. Instead of being proud that the PM is mentioning a unique local product, he is crying. The third consecutive defeat has clearly hit hard.”
Araku Coffee acquired its Geographical Indication (GI) designation in 2019. A GI label designates items that come from a certain geographic location and are considered to have unique characteristics or reputation due to their origin.
