PM Modi highlights Attapadi tribal women's Karthumbi umbrella brand in 'Mann ki Baat'
Palakkad: Tribal women of Attapadi, Palakkad, who make Karthumbi umbrellas, received the biggest boost when Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted them in his monthly radio show 'Mann Ki Baat' on Sunday.
Umbrellas have a special significance in the culture of Kerala… Umbrellas are an important part of the traditions and rituals there… But the umbrella I am talking about is the Karthumbi umbrella… and these are prepared in Attappadi in Kerala. These colourful umbrellas are spectacular. And the special thing is that these umbrellas are made by our tribal sisters of Kerala. Today, Karthumbi umbrellas are completing the journey from a small village in Kerala to multinational companies. What can be a better example of a voice for the local people? said Prime Minister Modi.
Around eight years ago, this umbrella brand created by around 70 women from the Attappadi tribe in Palakkad was launched. This innovative project was promoted by Thampu, an organization engaged in community projects and Peace Collective, an online community.
Another organization playing its role is a group of IT professionals under the name Progressive Techies, which deals with the marketing of umbrellas.
Starting out modestly, the project leaders have now begun training around 350 women who will soon be able to practice this profession.
These umbrellas, sold on online sites, cost between Rs 350 and Rs 390. The peak sales occur during the monsoon season, when around 15,000 units are sold each year. With Prime Minister Modi now promoting Karthumbi umbrellas, the makers of this innovative initiative are reassured and expect a sharp increase in sales.
