Supreme Court's final day: Trump immunity ruling expected

WASHINGTON (AP) The Supreme Court's final day of term will be Monday, when it will issue a pivotal decision on whether former President Donald Trump enjoys immunity from prosecution for his actions related to the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Why is this important

The opinion decides whether Trump, the first former president to face criminal charges, will stand trial in Washington.

The courts' handling of the issue has already drawn criticism, including questions about whether it is worth taking up at all, given that a federal appeals court rejected it and, more recently, that it has yet to be decided.

The Supreme Court has acted much more quickly in other major cases involving presidential power, including the Watergate tapes case. Nearly 50 years ago, the Court ruled 8-0, just 16 days after hearing arguments that Richard Nixon should turn over the recordings of the Oval Office conversations, thereby rejecting his claim of executive privilege.

The current composition of the high court took less than a month to unanimously rule that the insurrection clause of the post-Civil War Constitution could not be used by states to expel Trump from the presidential ballot.

Even if the Court rules against Trump, the timing of its ruling means the president may not face trial until after the 2024 election. If he is re-elected, he could appoint a new attorney general, who could have the case filed 'case without follow-up.

The nine-member court now includes three conservative justices appointed by Trump and two other conservative justices who have rejected calls to recuse themselves from the Jan. 6 cases due to questions about their impartiality.

Social media cases

The justices still have three more cases to hear Monday, including another major case involving social media laws in Texas and Florida that could limit how platforms regulate content posted. Both laws were intended to address complaints from conservatives that social media companies were liberal-leaning and censoring users based on their views, particularly those of the political right.
