ATC hints at daily hearing in Imran Khan cases

An anti-terrorism court in Islamabad has hinted at daily hearings of two cases registered against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and others at Sangjani and I-9 police stations from July 8. The court has also sought a written reply from the Adiala Jail Superintendent regarding the former prime minister's appearance through video link.

The hearing was presided over by Justice Tahir Abbas Sipra, with PTI leaders Ali Nawaz Awan, Wasif Qayyum and Amir Kayani, among others, appearing before the court.

The court said cases would be heard daily after July 8.

Regarding Imran Khan's appearance through video link, the anti-terrorism court has sought a written response from the Adiala Jail Superintendent.

During the proceedings, applications for exemption from appearance were filed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and PTI leader Amir Mughal. The judge rejected these applications, saying that exemption from appearance will not be accepted. It is not a valid reason to say that you cannot appear because you are out of the city.

Judge Sipra asked whether the responsibility for the presence lay with the accused or the court. PTI lawyers replied that the presence was the responsibility of the accused.

The anti-terrorism court judge announced that non-bailable arrest warrants would be issued against all the absent accused. PTI lawyers assured the court that all the accused would be present in the next hearing.

Justice Sipra said non-bailable arrest warrants would be issued against all the absent accused, adding that if the court received full assurance of their presence at the next hearing, the issue of the warrant would be revisited.

The PTI lawyers requested that the presence of all the accused be guaranteed at the next hearing. Judge Sipra responded that defendants who failed to appear on July 8 would be declared absconders. He stressed that a 30-day period was not necessary to declare someone a fugitive and that he was committed to seeing these cases through to their conclusion.

The anti-terrorism court adjourned the hearing of the two cases until July 8.
