Erdogan accuses political opposition of instigating anti-Syrian riots
Following anti-refugee riots that broke out in central Turkey over the weekend, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan issued a televised statement on Monday, blaming his political opposition for the violence by spreading anti-Syrian rhetoric and fomenting racism.
Following the public release of details of a case involving a Syrian refugee sexually harassing a seven-year-old Turkish girl, residents of the Melikgazi area in central Kayseri reportedly took to the streets in anger on Sunday evening.
Turkey's Interior Ministry said in a statement that the mob burned Syrian businesses, overturned cars and demanded the expulsion of refugees, with police arresting 67 people suspected of involvement in the riot.
Authorities report they have since arrested the attacker and placed the girl and her family in state protection.
Nothing can be achieved by fueling xenophobia and hatred of refugees in society, Erdogan said during his speech on Monday. “One of the reasons for the tragic event caused yesterday by a small group in Kayseri is the poisonous speech of the opposition.
In theory, Mr. Erdogan's pro-Islamist conservative party, the AKP, presented itself as a pro-refugee party and accused the opposition of racism.
The president's main rival, Ekrem Imamoglu, leader of the secular CHP party and mayor of Istanbul, has harshly criticized the administration's immigration policies, accusing Erdogan of using refugees as political pawns and has called for mass deportations.
While the CHP's base is largely made up of pro-democracy liberal voters, the party's anti-refugee agenda has led it to form a coalition with some right-wing ultranationalist parties.
Turkish officials say 3.6 million Syrian refugees reside in the country; however, unofficial figures estimate this number to be much higher.
