Pakistan's Election Commission denies that the elections were rigged. Khan has been in prison since last August and was convicted in some cases before February's national elections.

He is also fighting dozens of other ongoing cases. Khan and his party say the charges were politically motivated to thwart his return to power.

In recent months, Pakistani courts have suspended Khan's prison sentences in two cases involving the illegal acquisition and sale of state gifts, and also overturned his conviction for leaking state secrets.

However, he remained in prison due to a conviction in another case in which a lower court ruled his 2018 marriage was illegal. Khan also faces an anti-terrorism trial in connection with the violence in May last year.

Khan came to power in 2018 and was ousted in 2022 in a vote of no confidence. He alleged that the United States and the military establishment played a role in his ouster through the vote of no confidence. Both deny the accusations.

Several legal cases were filed against Khan following his ouster, which disqualified him as a candidate in the February elections.

Despite not running themselves, Khan-backed candidates secured the highest number of seats, but the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) formed a coalition government.
