Police interrupt pride march in Istanbul
Turkish authorities converged on a previously banned LGBTQ+ pride event in Istanbul on Sunday, leading to the arrests of at least 15 people.
Early Sunday, the Istanbul governor's office, the provincial authority appointed by the national government, warned organizers and potential participants that the pride event would not be permitted.
The annual June march takes place in cities around the world, but rarely in majority-Muslim countries. The conservative AKP government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which has propagated anti-LGBTQ+ views, made the event illegal in 2015 for unspecified “security reasons.”
The police search the streets
Eyewitnesses to the chaotic scene said police blocked roads leading to central Istanbul, shut down public transport lines and deployed large numbers of officers to prevent the march.
After dispersing the crowd, police reportedly searched the streets for suspects.
In response to the ban and subsequent crackdown, LGBTQ+ groups reportedly gathered across town, issuing a statement saying: “We never tire of misleading the police and forcing them to deal with us. »
“You have closed all the streets and all the squares; you stopped the life of an entire city, but you forgot that we will break through the stone and meet again if necessary. »
Turkish provincial authorities also vowed to investigate any organization calling for the march for illegal activities.
