Erdogan replaces two ministers in Türkiye, first cabinet reshuffle since local elections
ANKARA Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday replaced two ministers in his cabinet in a minor cabinet reshuffle following March 31 local elections in which his ruling party suffered a major setback.
In a decree published in the Official Gazette at midnight, Erdogan announced the replacements of Health Minister Fahrettin Koca and Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Mehmet Ozhaseki.
To replace Ozhaseki, Erdogan chose Murat Kurum, who served as Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change between 2018 and 2023. He was also the former mayoral candidate of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the March 31 local elections. He was defeated by incumbent Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
Koca was replaced by Kemal Memisoglu, who served as Istanbul's provincial health chief.
Ozhaseki, who took office in June 2023, announced his resignation earlier Monday, citing health concerns. Koca’s resignation, meanwhile, comes amid mounting criticism over problems in Turkey’s public and private healthcare sectors, including long waiting times for appointments at public hospitals. Koca has been the country’s health chief since 2018 and was at the helm during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The move marks the first change at the cabinet level since local elections on March 31, in which the AKP lost its national majority for the first time since its creation in 2002 to the main opposition Republican People's Party.
Erdogan had pledged to replace some names in his government at the party's first closed-door meeting just after the election.
