Support for Conservatives set to halve among 'Whitby women' voters
Whitby's female constituencies would prefer Sir Keir Starmer to Rishi Sunak as prime minister by 35% to 26%, although the Labour leader's approval rating among this group is minus 10, below the national average.
The main reasons why those who voted Conservative in 2019 were put off voting again were the party's handling of immigration and a lack of unity among Conservative MPs, with 42% citing each of these reasons.
Sixty-one per cent fear Labour will not deliver on its election promises, 60 per cent fear Sir Keir and Rachel Reeves, the shadow chancellor, will raise taxes, and 57 per cent are unsure whether Labour will tackle legal or illegal immigration.
Luke Tryl, director of More in Common, said: “Early in the campaign we identified winning back Whitby’s undecided women as crucial if the Conservatives were to avoid an electoral disaster.”
On the contrary, as the campaign has progressed, this bloc of voters has become increasingly disillusioned with the Conservatives and appears ready to punish them at the polls on Thursday.
Our survey of voters in Whitby's 40 ridings with the highest proportion of women reveals that not only have the Conservatives failed to win them back, but the influence against them in these ridings is stronger than anywhere else in the country.
