Erdogan warns of risk of 'ethnic war' if Iraqi Kurdistan gains independence
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Iraq's Kurdistan Region on Tuesday against seeking independence after a non-binding referendum, saying it risked triggering an “ethnic war” in the region. In his latest salvo of warnings to Iraqi Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani, Erdogan even warned that his region could run out of food and clothing if Turkish sanctions are implemented. “If Barzani and the Kurdish regional government do not reverse this mistake as soon as possible, they will go down in history with the shame of having dragged the region into an ethnic and sectarian war,” Erdogan said in a televised speech. Iraqi Kurds voted in a historic referendum on independence on Monday despite fierce opposition from Baghdad and neighboring Iran and Turkey. Results were expected within 24 hours, with an overwhelming “yes” vote clearly in doubt. Erdogan called the vote a “betrayal of our country” because it came at a time when Ankara and the neighboring KRG had good relations. “All options are on the table right now and are being discussed,” he said. “You (the KRG) will be stuck from the moment we start implementing sanctions,” he added. Ankara has said it will work more closely with the central government in Baghdad in response to the Iraqi Kurdish referendum. Baghdad has also refused to recognize the referendum. In a first sign of the new policy, Iraqi soldiers took part in a Turkish military exercise near the Iraqi border on Tuesday, an AFP photographer saw. Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Ankara's representative for Barzani's Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Omer Mirani, currently in Erbil, Iraq, had been ordered not to return to Turkey. “If he were here, we would have told him to leave the country,” Cavusoglu was quoted as saying by Turkish media. Erdogan also reiterated his threat to block crucial oil exports from Iraqi Kurds that pass through the Turkish port of Ceyhan. “As soon as we close the valve, it’s over, all your income will disappear,” he said. “When the trucks stop crossing to northern Iraq, they will find no food or clothes… What will Israel send them from where?” Erdogan insisted that no other country would recognize the independence of Iraqi Kurds except Israel, which warmly supported the referendum. “Who will recognize your independence? Israel. The world does not revolve around Israel,” he said. “Well, northern Iraq, what will you do with Israel alone?” “You should know that waving Israeli flags there will not save you.”
