Jokowi wants to strengthen health sector and keep medical costs down

According to Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Jokowi said at today's internal meeting that he wants to maintain an affordable price range for medical equipment and medicines. The government emphasizes that the high prices of medicines and medical equipment are not commensurate with the progress of the health sector in Indonesia.
“He also ordered the development of the domestic medicine and medical equipment industry so that Indonesia can be more resilient in the event of another pandemic,” he said.
The health minister advised Jokowi on some inefficient trade routes. He stressed that industrial governance should be more transparent and open to avoid unnecessary increases in drug prices.
Jokowi gave his cabinet two weeks to coordinate the strengthening of Indonesia's health system. Budi Gunadi said Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita and Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan would be involved.
“We need to coordinate with the Ministry of Industry which will regulate this, and propose the policy to the Ministry of Finance,” the minister said of the high prices of medicines and medical equipment.
Agus Gumiwang also said there is a need to study how to improve the health sector so that people can enjoy affordable health services. “Secondly, we need to accelerate investments in the health sector, especially in medicines and medical equipment,” he said.
Another topic discussed at the internal meeting was the health sector tax. The government wants a more efficient health tax, but no decision was taken on a relaxation of this tax at the meeting.
“We want it (the tax) to be simpler but without disrupting government revenues because cash flow is also important,” Budi Gunadi said.
