Boris Johnson's father defends actions that led to BA flight cancellation
Boris Johnson's father said: “I am pleased to have stood my ground after admitting to causing the cancellation of a British Airways flight.”
Stanley Johnson, 83, has been charged with causing the cancellation of a diverted commercial flight from Malaga to London Gatwick after he attempted to disembark the plane at Heathrow, where the aircraft was forced to land due to a runway closure at its intended destination.
Mr Johnson was on board flight BA2641 on June 28 when his plane and 15 others were diverted following a temporary closure of the Gatwick runway. The Airbus A321 was due to refuel at Heathrow before a short flight to Gatwick.
But Mr Johnson and two other passengers wanted to leave the plane, causing the plane to miss its scheduled departure to complete the final leg of the journey. All those on board had to get off and take a connecting bus to Gatwick.
The former prime minister's father defied the critics and insisted he was right.
In an article published in The Independent, he said: “On arrival at Heathrow, the captain informed us that after refuelling we would make the short return journey to Gatwick.” He then invited passengers without hold baggage to disembark at Heathrow if they wished.
I grabbed my luggage from the overhead bin and headed to the front entrance of the plane. Two other passengers joined me and the three of us walked out the door to the top of the metal staircase that was already in place.
I figured all we had to do was wait for ground transportation to arrive to take us to the terminal. That was the mistake.
Not allowed to disembark
Despite being invited to leave and no longer physically on board the plane, they were not allowed to disembark. They were told this was because Gatwick was the flight's official destination.
Mr Johnson said he would probably have let himself be guided to the plane, but he took pity on one nervous traveller who insisted she could not return to her seat.
He said: “One of my two companions was a woman who, to be honest, was on the verge of hysteria. I absolutely cannot get back on the plane, she screamed. I have just lost my husband in a plane crash. I struggled this morning to get on the plane in Malaga. I just can't imagine getting back on the plane now.”
He said that rather than allowing him to leave the plane, authorities decided to re-route the flight so that Heathrow was its final destination, effectively cancelling the scheduled flight to Gatwick and forcing all passengers to leave the plane at the wrong airport.
Mr Johnson wrote: “I am sorry, truly sorry, for the inconvenience caused to other passengers, some of whom no doubt had cars or relatives waiting for them at Gatwick, and who found themselves disembarking at Heathrow.”
I am as willing as anyone to take responsibility for my share of the blame when things go wrong. For example, if I try to make scrambled eggs for breakfast and they end up sticking inextricably to the pan, I admit it immediately.
But this time I'm glad I stuck it out. And there was one passenger, at least that poor woman whose husband had just died in a plane crash, who thanked me for it.
