Bushra Bibi, wife of former Pakistani PM Imran Khan, released on bail in corruption case

Former Pakistani prime minister Bushra Bibi’s wife was granted bail by a special court in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, Reuters news agency reported. The corruption case in which Bibi was implicated alongside Khan related to the alleged acceptance of financial assistance from a real estate developer for the establishment of Al Qadir University. Both individuals have denied any wrongdoing. In December last year, the National Accountability Bureau launched an investigation against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and others over the alleged acquisition of several acres of land under the guise of Al Qadir University Trust. Earlier on May 15, Imran Khan was granted bail by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in a land corruption case. The Al-Qadir Trust case involves the settlement of £190 million (about Rs 50 billion) transferred to Pakistan by the UK's National Crime Agency after it was recovered from a Pakistani real estate tycoon. During his tenure as prime minister, Khan chose to allow the businessman to use the funds to partially settle a fine of about Rs 450 billion, previously imposed by the Supreme Court, instead of depositing them into the national treasury.
