Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan's wife released on bail in corruption case

A special court in Rawalpindi city on Tuesday granted interim bail to the wife of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in a corruption case, local media ARY reported.

Bushra Bibi was charged alongside Khan in the case over the alleged acceptance of financial assistance from a property developer to establish Al Qadir University. Both have denied any wrongdoing.

Despite her release on bail, she remains incarcerated due to another conviction. Pakistani media quoted prison officials as saying that Bushra could not be released due to her conviction in the Iddat case.

“Although bail has been approved, Bushra Bibi cannot be released as she is serving a sentence in the Iddat marriage case,” jail authorities said.

Special Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Ali Waraich approved the former first lady's application for bail as part of the National Crime Agency's (NCA) $190 million settlement. The court later adjourned the hearing until July 5.

During the hearing, the court recorded statements from three witnesses and summoned more witnesses at the next hearing.

Last December, the National Audit Office launched an investigation against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and others over the alleged acquisition of many acres of land under the guise of the Al Qadir University Trust. The acquisition reportedly resulted in a loss of £190 million to the Pakistani exchequer.

The PTI chief had registered the Trust for the Al-Qadir University project on December 26, 2019.

In prison since last August, Khan was convicted in some cases ahead of February's general election, but a U.N. human rights working group said Monday that his arbitrary imprisonment violated international law.

Bushra Bibi, formerly known as Bushra Maneka, retains an aura of mystery. Imran Khan's third wife, she is known as a faith healer with a small following. Imran Khan's marital union with Bushra Bibi in 2018 was a low-key ceremony.
