Pakistani Imran Khan's wife granted bail in corruption case: media reports

KARACHI: A special court in Pakistan's Rawalpindi city on Tuesday granted interim bail to former prime minister Imran Khan's wife in a corruption case, ARY News reported.

Khan, in prison since last August, was convicted in some cases ahead of February's general election, but a U.N. human rights working group said Monday that his arbitrary imprisonment violated international law.

The Special Accountability Court has granted bail, ARY News said in a message on X, referring to interim bail.

Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, deny any wrongdoing in the case against them over the alleged receipt of financial assistance from a land developer to establish an educational institution, Al Qadir University.

However, his wife will remain in prison as she is also serving a sentence after her marriage to Khan was ruled illegal.

Khan and his party say the charges were politically motivated and aimed at thwarting his return to power.

In recent months, Pakistani courts have suspended Khan's prison sentences for two cases involving the illegal acquisition and sale of state gifts, while overturning his conviction for leaking state secrets.

The former cricket superstar faces dozens of other ongoing cases.
