UN group demands release of former Pakistani PM Imran Khan, saying his detention violates international law

ISLAMABAD, JULY 2 (Reuters) – A U.N. human rights working group on Monday called for the immediate release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been in jail since August 2023 when a court sentenced him to three years in prison after finding him guilty of hiding assets after selling state gifts. The Geneva-based U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention made the request after reviewing Khan’s case, in which he was convicted last year on corruption charges. Khan has been serving multiple prison sentences since 2022, when he was ousted in a no-confidence vote in parliament. The government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who replaced Khan after his ouster, had no immediate comment. Khan has been in prison since August 2023, when a court handed him a three-year jail term after convicting him of hiding assets after selling state gifts. That led to Khan being banned from politics and running in the February 8 election, which his party says was rigged. The Election Commission of Pakistan, which oversaw the vote, has denied allegations of electoral fraud. Despite his convictions in multiple cases, Khan remains the main opposition figure. Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, or PTI, which has a strong presence in parliament, welcomed the request by the U.N. panel, which said Khan’s detention in the corruption case had no legal basis and appeared to have been intended to disqualify him from running in the election. It said Khan was detained for exercising his right to freedom of expression or opinion and was also denied a fair trial and due process rights. The UN working group demanded Khan’s immediate release, saying it was an appropriate remedy. The group further said that Khan’s conviction in the corruption case was part of a much broader campaign of repression targeting the PTI in general and Khan in particular. It said that in the run-up to Pakistan’s February 2024 general elections, PTI candidates were arrested, tortured and intimidated into leaving the party; PTI rallies were disrupted and blocked; and the party was stripped of its iconic cricket bat symbol, forcing its candidates to run as independents. The U.N. panel also said Khan himself faces more than 150 politically motivated criminal cases, and just days before the election, he was convicted in three more cases and sentenced to an additional 10, 14 and seven years in prison, respectively. For Khan, who is 71, the combined 34-year prison sentence amounts to a life sentence, the panel said. Khan’s spokesman, Zulfi Bukhari, welcomed the panel’s findings and the calls for Khan’s release. Khan’s party won the most seats in the Feb. 8 vote but fell short of the majority needed to form a government. (AP)
