Congress spreading lies about Agniveers, says PM Modi
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday accused the Congress of spreading lies about the Agnipath scheme aimed at ensuring that youth do not sign up for short-term recruitment in the armed forces.
Responding to the debate on the motion of thanks to the President's address in the joint session of Parliament, Modi termed the Congress's actions on the Agnipath initiative as an attempt to weaken the armed forces.
“Lies are being spread about military recruitment to ensure that young people do not join the armed forces. There is a conspiracy in this regard. After all, at whose request is Congress trying to weaken our armed forces and spread lies?”
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi had criticised the Agnipath project and said the families of Agniveers, who sacrifice their lives in the line of duty, were not even entitled to any compensation.
“The Congress is spreading lies about defence reforms with the aim of weakening it. The Congress can never see the Indian armed forces becoming stronger,” Modi said, adding that the armed forces had to suffer due to lack of timely reforms in the past.
“Such things should not be said in public, that is why my lips are sealed,” he said, adding that the nation was also misled over the acquisition of Rafale fighter jets.
Modi said the government was initiating reforms to make the armed forces combat-ready.
“In recent years, many things have changed. After the appointment of the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, the integration of the forces has been strengthened,” he said.
Modi said the country's armed forces should be young and there was a need to increase their presence in the armed forces.
“We need to increase the number of youth in the armed forces. That is why we are carrying out reforms to ensure that our armed forces are combat ready,” Modi said.
