Xi Jinping in Kazakhstan for SCO summit, state visit – Latest News
Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Astana ahead of his participation in the 24th summit of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and for a state visit to Kazakhstan, which will be followed by another one to Tajikistan, at the invitation of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. On the sidelines of the summit, Beijing reports, the Chinese leader will also meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Beijing state media reported this. Xi will be busy until July 6, not only in Kazakhstan, but also in Tajikistan, at the invitation of President Emomali Rahmon.
China is ready to chart “the path forward for closer cooperation” with Kazakhstan and “draw a new blueprint for further growth of bilateral relations,” Xi said in a signed article published by Kazakhstanskaya Pravda newspaper and Kazinform International News. Agency The Shanghai Cooperation Organization comprises nine countries spread across a vast area of the globe from Moscow to Beijing, accounting for about 40 percent of the world's population and more than 25 percent in terms of GDP. The permanent members are Kazakhstan, which holds the rotating presidency, India, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran are set to join after it was decided at the 2023 SCO summit, hosted virtually by India, that they would become full members.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Monday that Beijing believes the SCO summit will “help build more consensus among all parties and contribute to promoting the security, stability and development of member countries” toward “lasting peace and common prosperity in the world.”
Beijing has stepped up its diplomacy in Central Asia, a key link in the Belt and Road Initiative infrastructure development project, the New Silk Road launched by Xi in 2013. After the Astana meeting, China will assume the rotating presidency of the Eco for the period 2024-2025.
