Boris Johnson issues surprise rallying cry for UK election | World News
Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson made a surprise appearance on the British election campaign trail on Tuesday, launching a last-ditch attempt to rally support for the Conservatives and their leader Rishi Sunak, the man who helped oust him from power.
Johnson won a landslide majority in the last election in 2019 before being forced to resign in 2022 by a Conservative mutiny that Sunak helped spark and which exposed deep divisions within the ruling party, particularly between Sunak and Johnson.
Greeted by chants of “Boris! Boris!” from his supporters two days before an election the Conservatives are predicted to be a heavy defeat, he introduced the current prime minister at a campaign event in London.
In a speech that listed many of his own achievements, Johnson stopped short of backing Sunak personally, but focused on what he saw as the dangers of the opposition Labour Party coming to power.
“None of us can stand by while a Labour government prepares to use a mass majority to undo much of what we have achieved,” he said.
Acknowledging that some might be surprised to see him, he said he was glad Sunak had asked him to help. “Of course, I couldn't say no,” he added.
“Whatever our differences are, they are utterly insignificant compared to the disaster we could face if these so-called opinion polls prove correct,” Mr Johnson said.
Johnson, one of the best-known figures in British politics and a proven election winner, has spent almost the entire campaign in the background, having left frontline politics in 2023. He has endorsed individual candidates in video messages but has never before appeared at major campaign events.
Sunak, who appeared on stage after Johnson but not alongside him, thanked his predecessor. “Isn’t it great to have our Conservative family together, my friends?” he said.
