UN body demands immediate release of Imran Khan

GENEVA: A United Nations (UN) human rights working group has demanded the immediate release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, saying he was being held in violation of international law.

The appropriate solution would be to release Mr. Khan immediately and grant him an enforceable right to compensation and other reparations, in accordance with international law, the Geneva-based United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention said in its report.

The UN body also claimed that Imran Khan was allegedly used for political purposes.

The working group concluded that his (Imran Khan's) detention had no legal basis and appeared to have been intended to disqualify him from running for political office. Thus, from the outset, these prosecutions were not based on law and were allegedly used for political purposes, the report said.

Earlier, US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel had termed the cases against Imran Khan as an internal matter of Pakistan.

He said the US government urges the Pakistani government to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms.

It is pertinent to mention here that the former prime minister has been behind bars since August 2023 and was later convicted in the Toshakhana, Cipher and Iddat cases.

Imran Khan's sentences in the Toshakhana and Cipher cases have been suspended while he remains in jail in the Iddat case.

Encryption Case

On January 30, a special court sentenced former prime minister, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to ten years in prison each.

The two PTI leaders have been charged with conspiring to use the contents of the encryption for malicious purposes.

In its verdict, the court said the prosecution had enough evidence to prove the charges against the former prime minister and former foreign minister.

The First Information Report (FIR) was registered on August 15 under the Official Secrets Act. It was registered following a complaint by the Home Minister.

Toshakhana case

On January 31, an accountability court sentenced the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and his wife Bushra Bibi to 14 years in prison each in the Toshakhana case.

The verdict was delivered by Supreme Court Justice Muhammad Bashir. The PTI founder and his wife were also banned from holding any public office for 10 years. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 787 million.

Iddate case

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi have been accused of getting married during the three-month iddat period that follows a divorce.

Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were sentenced to 7 years in prison in the un-Islamic iddat case in February this year.

The court sentenced PTI founder Imran and Bushra Bibi to 7 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500,000 each.
