A special court in Pakistan on Tuesday granted interim bail to the wife of former prime minister Imran Khan in a $190 million corruption case, local media reported.

This comes months after an Islamabad high court approved Mr Khan's bail in the same case, Geo TV reported.

The couple were accused in the case of receiving financial assistance from a real estate developer to establish Al Qadir University.

The National Accountability Bureau, Pakistan's anti-corruption agency, has alleged that Mr Khan's government struck a deal with real estate tycoon Malik Riaz that caused more than $190 million in losses to the national treasury.

In December 2019, during an investigation by the UK National Crime Agency, Mr Riaz admitted handing over the goods.

Both have denied any wrongdoing, with Mr Khan saying at the time that the land had been donated for charity.

Bibi will remain in prison as she is also serving time in a case involving her marriage to Mr Khan.

Meanwhile, a group of United Nations human rights experts on Monday called for Mr Khan's immediate release, saying he had been arbitrarily detained in violation of international law.

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention made the request after reviewing Mr Khan's case, in which he was convicted last year of corruption.

Mr Khan has faced multiple criminal cases since he was ousted in a no-confidence vote in parliament in 2022.

The government of Shehbaz Sharif, who replaced Mr Khan after his ouster, had no immediate comment.

Mr Khan has been in detention since August 2023, when he was sentenced to three years in prison for allegedly hiding assets after selling state gifts. That conviction led to Mr Khan being banned from seeking political office and running in the February 8 election, which his party says was rigged.

The Pakistan Election Commission has denied the allegation.
