Law Minister defends handling of Imran Khan's detention amid international scrutiny

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar on Tuesday addressed the detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, stressing that it was a strictly internal matter for Pakistan.

The statement comes amid international scrutiny of Khan's imprisonment, with a UN human rights working group recently declaring that Khan's detention was arbitrary and in violation of international law, calling for his immediate release.

In response, Minister Tarar reiterated Pakistan's status as a sovereign nation, asserting that legal proceedings are conducted independently by the judiciary.

He asserted that Imran Khan was being treated in accordance with the law and all his rights were protected by national and international norms. Tarar also noted that any judicial relief granted to Khan in various cases demonstrated Pakistan's commitment to conduct transparent and fair trials that adhere to constitutional and international norms.

Additionally, the US State Department has weighed in on the issue, calling Khan's detention an internal matter of Pakistan.

At a news conference, Vedant Patel, the State Department's principal deputy spokesman, referred to the UN's findings that Khan's detention was unlawful and referred the matter to the UN for further details. He said the US would not provide a further assessment on the matter.
