The US president warns that the Supreme Court's decision means there are virtually no limits to what a president can do in office.

President Joe Biden denounced the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on presidential immunity as a dangerous precedent that undermines the rule of law and called on the American people to dissent by rejecting Republican nominee Donald Trump in the November election.

Biden made the statement shortly after the highest US court ruled that Trump could not be sued for any actions that fall within his constitutional powers as president, but could be sued for private acts. The decision is seen as a landmark ruling that recognized for the first time any form of presidential immunity from prosecution.

In a speech from the White House on Monday, Biden said the court's ruling meant it was highly unlikely that Trump, his predecessor and opponent, would face trial before the Nov. 5 presidential election for his role in trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election that Biden won.

This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America. Every one of us is equal before the law. No one, no one is above the law. Not even the president of the United States, Biden said.

He said the court's ruling meant there were now virtually no limits to what a president could do.

“This is a dangerous precedent, because the power of the office will no longer be limited by law,” Biden said. “The only limits will be those that the president imposes on himself,” he added.

Biden said he was siding with liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who wrote that she feared for American democracy in her dissenting opinion on the 6-3 decision by the conservative-leaning Supreme Court. Three members of the Supreme Court were appointed by Trump.

The American people will now have to do what the Court should have been willing to do, but will not. The American people will pass judgment on Donald Trump's term in office, Biden said.

“I agree with Justice Sotomayor’s dissent today,” he added. “The American people should disagree as well. I dissent. God bless you all. God help preserve our democracy,” Biden concluded.

Asked on Fox News about Biden's remarks, House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, called them despicable and dangerous and accused the president of trying to undermine the Supreme Court.

Biden is running for re-election against Trump, a rematch of the 2020 vote, and has sharply criticized his rivals' actions related to the January 6, 2021, raid on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters who believed his false claims that he won the 2020 election.

The man who sent that mob to the Capitol now faces possible conviction for what happened that day, Biden said. And because of today’s decision, that is highly unlikely. It is a great disservice to the people of this nation.

During his brief speech, the president did not take questions or mention the debate with Trump, his volatile performance triggering anxiety within the Democratic Party.
