President Jokowi inaugurates Southeast Asia's first and largest electric vehicle ecosystem and electric battery cell factory
President Joko Widodo inaugurated the South Korean Battery and Electric Vehicle Ecosystem in Indonesia, which was held at PT. Hyundai LG Indonesia (HLI) Green Power, Karawang Regency, West Java Province, on Wednesday, July 3, 2024. The President said that this is the first and largest electric vehicle battery cell factory in Southeast Asia.
In his speech, the Head of State expressed the importance of the battery ecosystem as another milestone in Indonesia's commitment to becoming a major player in the global electric vehicle supply chain. “Today, we are opening a new chapter by establishing an important milestone in our commitment to becoming a global player in the battery cell and electric vehicle ecosystem. electric vehicle” said the president.
The President also appreciated the vision and courage of Hyundai Chairman Chung, who launched this project amidst the challenges of the global pandemic. According to the President, this great project would not have been possible without Chairman Chung's vision and courage.
“I would like to once again express my gratitude to President Chung for having the courage to decide something important in a pandemic situation,” the president said.
The president said that this project not only includes the construction of a smelter and a battery cell factory for electric vehicles, but also integrates the added value of Indonesian natural resources such as nickel, bauxite and copper. Through this integration, the president believes, Indonesia can compete with other countries.
“For electric cars, who can stop us when the conditions are so competitive?” said the president.
The President also appreciated the IDR 20 trillion investment of Hyundai Automobile Plant as well as the consortium between Hyundai and LG with an investment of IDR 160 trillion for the electric battery ecosystem. This investment is a concrete proof of the close cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea.
“I hope this will mark an improvement in relations between the Republic of Korea and Indonesia,” the president said.
For your information, this 319,000 square meter battery cell factory is joint venture Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution. By the first half of 2024, the plant's annual capacity will reach 10 GWh of battery cells, enough for 150,000 electric vehicles.
