Jokowi calls for safeguarding national data after cyberattack
Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has stressed the essential role of data backup as a preventive measure against hacking activities.
His remarks come after a recent cyberattack at the Temporary National Data Center (PDNS) 2 in Surabaya, East Java.
“Back up all our national data to prevent the same incident from happening again,” he said after inaugurating an electric vehicle battery factory in Karawang, West Java, on Wednesday.
Jokowi said the government had assessed the incident in which ransomware was used to paralyze the servers of several institutions and ministries.
“We have evaluated everything. The most important thing is to find a solution to prevent this from happening again,” Jokowi stressed.
He then stressed that the hacking of national data was not happening only in Indonesia.
“This is happening in other countries as well,” he said.
Cybersecurity firm Surfshark reported that similar incidents have also been seen in several developed countries in recent years, including the United States (2004), England (2017), Italy (2018), Russia, China and Germany (2019), Brazil (2020), France (2021) and Canada (2022).
The Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs has demanded that all ministries, institutions and agencies back up their data.
The government is working on multi-layered data protection using cloud services directly monitored by the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN).
Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto confirmed that PDNS 2 services would recover from the cyberattacks this month.
“This is a follow-up to the president's order regarding the return to normal of all public services in July,” he said at a press conference on July 1.
