UN rights group demands release of former PM Imran Khan

Islamabad/United Nations, July 2: A United Nations human rights working group has demanded the immediate release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, saying his detention constitutes a “violation of international law”.

Islamabad has maintained that the arrest of the former prime minister and the ongoing legal proceedings against him are strictly an internal matter of the country.

The Geneva-based UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention said in its report:

“The appropriate solution would be to release Mr Khan immediately and grant him an enforceable right to compensation and other reparations, in accordance with international law.”

The UN body also claimed that Imran Khan had been “exploited for political purposes”.

“The Working Group concludes that his (Imran Khan's) detention had no legal basis and appeared to have been intended to disqualify him from running for political office. Thus, from the outset, these proceedings were not based on law and were allegedly used for political purposes,” the report said.

Earlier, US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel had termed the cases against Imran Khan as “an internal matter of Pakistan”.

He said the US government urges the Pakistani government to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The former prime minister has been behind bars since May 9, 2023, and was subsequently convicted in the Toshakhana, Cipher and Iddat cases.

Imran Khan's sentences in the Toshakhana and Cipher cases have been suspended while he remains in jail in the Iddat case.

Reacting to the UN panel's statement, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar stressed that Pakistan is a sovereign state where constitutional and legal matters are upheld by the judiciary.

He said the former prime minister is serving his sentence as a legally convicted individual and is entitled to all rights provided by national laws and international standards.

On January 30, a special hearing before a special court sentenced former prime minister, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to ten years in prison each.

The two PTI leaders have been charged with conspiring to use the contents of the encryption for malicious purposes.

The First Information Report (FIR) was registered on August 15 under the Official Secrets Act. It was registered following a complaint by the Home Minister.
